  • Ear iron of the 1580s.  Published in Wielent Harms's Het geheim van de smid (Tricks of the Trade).
  • Werner van den Valckert - A Man Cutting Tobacco.  First half of 17th century.  Private collection.  The painting represents an interior with a man wearing a fur hat and cutting tobacco, a lady handing him a pipe. The woman wears an oorijzer, or 'ear iron', the metal structure used to support a bonnet. Almost all contemporary depictions show oorijzers worn in conjunction with a bonnet, the present picture is highly unusual in showing the oorijzer worn without a bonnet.

Shoes of the Low Countries

  • Medieval artifact has been well preserved: Flat clogs with leather upper, dated 1400-1500, Museum Rotterdam.

  • Shepards wearing pattens from the 15th century. The shoes were raised wooden platforms that fastened over the shoe with a strap for protection during bad weather.

Is this woman not wearing her laced overgown or have Pieter simpl forgotten to paint her lacing in this otherwise very detailed picture? With snub nosed huik.
